In depth

Verdict

Some progressive types can be led home by Mephisto, who is marginally preferred over Turpin Green and Eskimo Pie, who both merit plenty of respect today. The latter won in good style at this track on his last two starts and has earned his crack at this higher grade. The step up in trip should not be a problem for him and, with the ground in his favour, a bold bid is anticipated. Turpin Green is also going the right way but has a little to prove regarding his stamina. So a bigger threat is posed by Ardaghey, who is developing into a useful stayer that can pay his way as time goes on. However, Mephisto, winner of the Ebor last year, looks a class above this lot at this stage. The former Luca Cumani inmate fared well when he was thrown in at the deep end on his hurdles debut at Cheltenham last month. He holds a Royal & SunAlliance Novices' Hurdle entry and can frank his claims with a clear passage today.
