Verdict

Indy Driver is selected ahead of Hasty Retreat and Benfleet Boy. That said, a move for the well handicapped St Petersburg would not be without foundations, even though the eight-year-old is on a losing run stretching back three years. Rated 101 at his best from his time with Mark Tompkins, St Petersburg proved that he can still be competitive when he finished third in a similar race at Goodwood last October. He goes well fresh and is a lively candidate to consider at an each-way price. Benfleet Boy is very lightly raced due to sustaining a fractured knee two years ago. He justified the reasons for keeping him in training by winning at Folkestone in April and, having been given a sensible time off to recover, he comes here with a solid chance if building on the effort today. Hasty Retreat won in good style at Newcastle in May and is better judged on that performance than the one he posted at Yarmouth last month. The handicapper has kept him on the same mark, so he does come here with something to prove. Therefore, we prefer to take a chance with Indy Driver, who is open to plenty of improvement and, with this surface expected to suit, this appears to be a good option for the James Fanshawe-trained colt to deliver on the promise he has shown this season.
