In depth
Verdict
Marcus Tregoning's luck has to change somewhere and it may well start with Meshaheer, who is a classy individual that can see off Azarole and St Petersburg, who hold sound claims on the best of their form. As does Le Vie Dei Colori, who is expected to use this as a stepping stone towards an appearance at Newbury next month. However, only one of Luca Cumani's string has made the frame so far this term and there has to be the suspicion that he will be better for the run today. Cape Fear should not be underestimated as he is still open to improvement and can go well at likely odds for each-way players. St Petersburg was a big disappointment in the Lincoln earlier this month and is surely better than he showed at Doncaster. Any cut in the ground will help his cause and he could be one to consider if any rain gets into the ground before the off. Azarole hails from a stable that do well with their runners at this course and he should give a good account of himself. The James Fanshawe-trained gelding arrives in good form and is sure to be a popular choice after his gutsy display when winning at Warwick last month. However, he was entitled to win that race on the official figures and faces a stiffer test here. Especially if Meshaheer (the winner of the July Stakes when trained by David Loder as a juvenile) is ready to do himself justice at the first time of asking this season. The six-year-old does not have many miles on the clock and his class can see him through today.
