Verdict

This is a very open and interesting affair in which many can be given chances, with our vote going to Burgundy. Starting at the top and Zalkani has won three of his last four races, all over course and distance, and could still have more to come. The form of his last race has worked out, with the fifth winning well since, but the fact remains that he is now four pounds worse off with Burgundy for the length he finished ahead of him recently. Ok, it was a race run at a muddling pace but Burgundy, who has won over course and distance, might be able to build on that run and is given our vote to do so. Watch for money for Lili Marlane, who is now only two pounds above the mark from which she won here in November over a mile, and who has won over this trip on the Flat. Eastborough remains consistent but might have to settle for a place again, while Resonate could still be reasonably weighted and his rider takes off a useful three pounds. And if you use The Violin Player when building in formlines, then Resonate and Smoothly Does It have a chance of overhauling Zalkani, as does Resonate if you factor in his rider's three-pound claim. As you can tell, it's a tight handicap. Of the others, Fuel Cell and Street Life remain open to improvement, and Brendan Powell adds more interest by running Irish import Indigo Sky, although he hasn't shown too much in a couple of British starts yet. Blackmail has now also dropped to a handy mark and, as course and distance winners, you cannot rule out Dandygrey Russett and Border Edge. All in all, it's a fascinating contest, and one that might go to Burgundy.
