In depth
Verdict
Quantum Leap can gain another course and distance victory at the expense of Winthorpe, Indian Maiden, Compton Banker and Tayif. Quite a few can be given chances here, but preference is for Quantum Leap who has been in good shape of late. He goes well here, four of his six career wins coming at the Surrey track, and having been unable to defy a 9lb rise when third over seven furlongs last time, he is dropped back in trip. Although most of his best efforts have been over further, he should have the class in this company to offset this move back in trip. Winthorpe has been in action since 2002 but only now tries the Polytrack for the first time. His best form in 2003 gives him claims if he adapts. Indian Maiden would have needed her return to action at Wolverhampton a fortnight ago and can improve, while Compton Banker has been contesting claimers of late but is well treated on the best of his form here in the past. Tayif is a regular here and although he too has been keeping lesser company than normal he is always dangerous to leave out of calculations. Old Cretan Gift was supposed to be retired after finishing a fine third at Wolverhampton in December but has obviously been giving all the right signs at home and it would be nice if he were to be involved, but in a wide-open contest we shall row in with Quantum Leap.
