In depth

Verdict

An interesting maiden with a hatful of top yards represented, but Russian Empress is an interesting contender and get the nod over Emirates Lady, Citron Presse and Virginias Best. The last named is a nicely bred filly that, as a half-sister to a German Derby winner, is bred to get a bit further. Her yard has been in cracking form and she should not be underestimated here. Neither should Citron Presse, who was not given a hard time on her introduction at Goodwood earlier in the month but is likely to be more tuned up today. John Gosden is noted for his patience with fillies of her type and she can be found a suitable opening as she gains in experience. Emirates Lady represents Godolphin and, as their only runner of the day, she is sure to attract the interest of the betting public. However, it has been a mixed campaign for the boys in blue and this daughter of Unbridled's Song is not one to be going overboard with at cramped odds. Therefore, it can be worth chancing a small investment in Russian Empress, who as her name implies is a sister to the top-class Russian Rhythm. Sir Michael Stoute, fresh from a profitable Royal Ascot, will be more than keen to boost her paddocks value and appears to have found a good opening for her to strike today.
