Verdict

Philip Hobbs has wasted no time in putting Monticelli over the larger obstacles and the five-year-old has to be respected on his chasing bow but lack of a recent run is of concern and preference is for Valance, who gets the vote over The Glen. The selection had comparable form to the pick of these over hurdles and is sure to have been well schooled for his debut over fences. Charlie Egerton's gelding comes here fit from the flat and has the assistance of Tony McCoy in the saddle. Goblin a dual winner over hurdles last term has claims if fit enough on his return and is another to consider along with the six-year-old Conroy, who is relatively lightly raced. Robber Red has been point-to-pointing since last being seen under rules but probably lacks the class of one or two of his rivals and of more interest is Richard Lee's The Glen who comes here with the benefit of recent form over the larger obstacles. Valance holds solid claims on all hurdling form and, provided that he jumps well enough, may be too classy for his rivals.
