Verdict
A competitive renewal of this prestigious prize and marginal preference is for Hurricane Alan while Tarjman, Membership and Ashdown Express appear as the main dangers. Richard Hannon's charge impressed when showing a fine turn of foot to land the Group 3 Craven Stakes on his seasonal return at Newmarket in April and has put up a number of creditable performances in defeat since. The Mukaddamah colt was far from disgraced when a close fifth in a Group 2 contest at the Glorious Goodwood meeting before appearing unlucky not to land a Listed event on a return visit to the Sussex track last time. The selection was short of racing room in the straight and had to be switched to challenge but flew at the finish once daylight arrived, giving the impression that he would have won with a clear run and can gain compensation under Jimmy Fortune. Tarjman has proved a most progressive sort who has earned the right to compete at this level having won all three starts this term. Alec Stewart's charge put up a particularly smart effort to land a Yarmouth conditions event on unfavourable weight terms last time and there should be more to come from this lightly raced type. Membership was an impressive winner of the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot but looks held by the selection on last month's Goodwood form while Ashdown Express has conditions in his favour and can reach a place but Hurricane Alan looks the one to beat.
