A very tricky race to call and a graveyard for favourites, with only one win in the past decade, but we think that the likely market leader RANSOM NOTE is the one to be on this time, while Caldercruix, Gold Rules and Treble Jig are among a host of dangers. The selection comes here on the back of a decisive success in the Britannia Handicap at Royal Ascot, when he saw off 26 opponents over a mile on fast ground. He gets those conditions again and is now stepped up to a trip that should be within his compass. Clearly a horse on the up, he would have to go close to winning this if he is to live up to connections' claim that he is a Group horse in-the-making. Caldercruix is up 5lbs despite being comfortably accounted for over course and distance last time, but he is well worth another try on ground that suits and is far from ruled out. Gold Rules stayed on well to win at Redcar over this trip and a 5lb rise looks fair, so he should compete, while Treble Jig was also successfully stepped up to this distance at Goodwood and receives the same rise in the handicap. He has it to prove on fast ground but otherwise looks a leading player. Constant Contact looked like he had not handled Epsom last time, though it may have been the trip, rather than track, that did for him. Either way he has a bit to prove today. Sand Skier is not certain to stay according to pedigree, though he ran as though he would get the trip when last seen at Royal Ascot and with the yard in form he has some sort of claim. Red Badge looked smart enough in higher company last time but an 8lb rise makes it tough back in this grade today and Ransom Note can continue his progression.
