Verdict

A tricky opener can go to Impeller, who acts well at the track and makes more appeal at the odds than Promotion and Notable Guest, who hail from Sir Michael Stoute's yard and are hard to split on jockey bookings. Thyolo and Unshakable are others that have form in these type of events and also merit consideration. Unshakable has gone well here on several occasions in the past and can usually be relied upon to run his race. However, he is still 4lb above his last winning mark and will need everything to drop just right for him. As will Thyolo, who was clobbered by the handicapper after putting in a series of good efforts last year. He may just need to drop a few pounds in the weights. Promotion overcame a stiff test at the weights when winning this race last year and obviously has to be respected. However, he too looks up against it from a stone higher mark and may be vulnerable. The fact that Mick Kinane also deserts him in favour of Notable Guest is another slight negative. The last named is open to improvement and will handle the ground without any problems. He looks sure to be a popular choice and can at least make the frame with a clear run. However, Impeller makes slightly more appeal at the odds, as he loves these big field dashes for the line. The ground has really come up in his favour and he is fancied to build on what was a solid effort from his reappearance at Newbury a fortnight ago.
