In depth
Verdict
Maraahel sprung a bit of a surprise when beating the well regarded Destination Dubai in a maiden over course and distance last month and has to be respected but with a doubt concerning the form of Sir Michael Stoute's horses at present he is passed over in favour of New Mexican, who gets the verdict over Carte Sauvage. The last mentioned looks the pick of Mark Johnston's two runners on the evidence of his Ayr maiden winner but was disappointing when beaten at odds on at the same venue last month. Stablemate Tafaahum remains unexposed following a win at Ayr in maiden-company on his latest start and should improve for the longer trip today. Clive Brittain's Forthright has been highly tried in recent starts and should appreciate the drop in class, while the consistent Sew'n'so Character may again find at least one too good. Having been outclassed behind the high class Pearl Of Love in his first two starts, New Mexican duly opened his account in a maiden here over six furlongs. Far from disgraced when second to another highly rated juvenile Sabbeeh back over seven furlongs at Doncaster last time, the son of Dr Fong should find this opposition less taxing. The step up in trip should suit and, while a softer surface may be ideal, New Mexican looks the one to beat.
