In depth

Verdict

Scott's View looks to have been found the ideal opening and can prove too strong for the enigmatic First Ballot and Distinction. Mark Johnston's charge had a wonderful season last year, picking up eight races along the way, rising a total of 44lbs throughout the campaign. Given a nice break through the winter, he didn't reappear until last month at Newmarket, where he was sweaty and edgy beforehand and he gave the impression he was in need of the run. With that outing under his belt, better was seen of him at Goodwood, when chasing home the useful First Charter, with Romany Prince held back in third. He should now be fighting fit and can take care of Ebor seventh Distinction. First Ballot often flatters only to deceive and using First Charter as a yardstick, looks to have something to find with the selection. This looks something of an act of desperation for connections of Derby failure Prince Nureyev. However, he is out of a mare that won over 12-furlongs so it looks worth a shot. But, with no doubts about ground or trip Scott's View looks the logical choice.
