In depth

Verdict

Several of these have solid claims but we take a chance with Famous Grouse, who is holding his form well and deserves a change of fortune. Pretty Star and Almah are others to throw into the mix, while it would also be interesting to see if any support arrives for Sharp Belline, who was far from disgraced in defeat at Haydock last month. The form of that run gives him sound each-way prospects here and, with his rider's claim coming in very handy, it will be no surprise to see him go close. However, it is very hard for a horse to make all the running here and others could have an edge near the finish. Pretty Star has to be a candidate to be one of those, as he is improving all the time and arrives here on the back of a confidence boosting win at Newbury. But this is a tougher race and he too could be faltering near the line if the ground comes up testing. Almah is respected but has a few questions to answer regarding stamina for the trip. Therefore, we switch our attention to Famous Grouse, who missed out on the Pertemps final at Cheltenham but has to be a serious contender at this level. Peter Bowen is a shrewd placer of horses of his type and we take the hint that he has found the right race for Famous Grouse to shine in today.
