In depth

Verdict

Peter Bowen has his string in good form at present and is taken to land another prize with Tommy Spar, who is preferred to It's Ej and Montys Island. The selection stepped up on his bumper form when making an encouraging debut over hurdles at Hereford earlier this month, finishing third behind the useful Supreme Dawn. Tony McCoy has been booked for the ride and a reproduction of that latest effort may suffice. Charlie Mann's ex-Irish Montys Island ran well on his debut for new connections here over three miles earlier this month and may do better back in trip today, while Sue Smith's It's Ej lost no caste in defeat on his hurdling debut at Wetherby last month and has to be respected. Martin Pipe's French import Manx Royal gave little sign of encouragement on his first start at Aintree three months ago but has been given a break since then. Dual bumper winner Chocolate Soldier, hurdling debutante Herne Bay and the Philip Hobbs-trained Giorgio are others to consider but Peter Bowen's string are in good form at present and Tommy Spar is taken to give them another winner.
