In depth

Verdict

Rock Peak has run encouragingly in both starts so far and has to be respected but Hugh Morrison's colt may have to settle for minor honours, with preference for Criterion who gets the vote over Emerald Crystal. The last mentioned stepped up on his debut effort when a close fourth behind Foolin Myself in a Newmarket handicap when last seen in November but Brian Meehan's colt is far from certain to stay this longer trip today and he looks best watched. John Dunlop's By Command may do better as a three-year-old but has been off the track since July and may be best left out of calculations, while Hasty Retreat did not progress from a promising debut at Wolverhampton on a return visit to the track on his second start. The vote then goes to Sir Michael Stoute's Criterion, who improved on his second start and should improve further today for the longer trip and the softer ground.
