In depth
Verdict
A maximum turnout for a moderate, but competitive heat. Gay Kellaway sets a poser by saddling both Geronimo and recent course winner River Days. The former has his optimum conditions and must go well off a 1lb higher mark than when successful here back in February, while River Days, who has won on the last three occasions he has been to Dunstall Park, looks to have plenty to do off this 8lbs higher mark, but the five-year-old looks to be on the upgrade and deserves plenty of respect. Ashtree Belle has yet to finish out of the first five here in six outings and she will be all the better for her recent spin at Nottingham. She isn't badly treated on the best of her form and should go well, while Mister Mal, although without a win for nearly two years comes from a powerful yard and is one to keep an eye on. However, a chance is taken with the mare Chispa, who is clearly not as good as she was, but she is certainly well treated on her old form, as she can race off a 23lbs lower mark than when at her best. She is effective around here, as she showed when winning as a juvenile and will appreciate the stronger handling she will get here, having not got competitive under her amateur rider at Southwell.
