Verdict

An ultra-competitive handicap in which EPSOM SALTS is a most tentative pick ahead of Step This Way and Half Way House. Pat Phelan's charge was campaigned on the artificial surfaces in the early part of his career but managed to win a turf handicap at Epsom at the beginning of last month. With Epsom and Brighton form largely translating well, we are prepared to forgive him a modest effort at Newbury. Mark Johnston's season typically went into orbit at Glorious Goodwood. The Scot had plenty of runners entered for this prize but relies upon Step This Way. He has to bounce back from a disappointment at York over two miles, but its worth noting that he took a Pontefract handicap off a 3lb higher mark last year and for that reason, he should not be ignored. There is no doubting that Half Way House is a most progressive individual. The Dubai Destination gelding was imperious at Folkestone having previously scrambled to victory at this course in June. This race will represent a much tougher engagement than those he has faced previously as all his wins had obtained in much smaller fields. Gaselee gets in off a featherweight. She won readily over a mile at Beverley last time out but had shaped well over this trip at Lingfield Park in June. Gary Moore's Free Tussy to be popular with the locals. A recent winner at Lingfield on the polytrack, he did disappoint when previously tried at this course. Outlandish had bits and pieces of form when trained by Andrew Turnell. He was a tad disappointing at Doncaster though a return to fast ground could see a return to form. Ross Moor makes most appeal of the rest. A good race that can go to Epsom Salts.
