In depth
Verdict
A fascinating handicap in which we like the look of Sergeant Cecil, Ski Jump, Defining, High Action and Lochbuie with the each-way choice being Ski Jump. The selection is a very likeable gelding who caught the eye with a never-nearer fifth in a competitive handicap at York last. Lightly-raced, and from a stable in form, he has a relative feather weight to carry and it would be no surprise to see him go well today. Sergeant Cecil has been holding his form well and was only just beaten by the subsequent Ebor winner Mephisto at Goodwood last time out. In the Ebor, Mephisto finished ahead of Defining and Crow Wood, with the latter well held. Using those formlines then Sergeant Cecil is entitled to respect here and maybe shades it over Defining, although the latter put in a best-yet performance at York. High Action has won his last two races and still has a fairly-handicapped look to him, while Lochbuie is lightly-raced, open to further improvement, and seems to hold Tungsten Strike on July Goodwood form. Others that obviously have to be considered are the Carlisle Bell winner, Loves Travelling, the lightly-raced but improving Lodger, and the remarkably prolific Sendintank. It all adds up to a smashing race, and one in which Ski Jump can go well.
