Verdict

Gatwick can land his second big handicap in a week, with Oasis Star, Zonus, Capped For Victory and Appalachian Trail not out of it in a decent renewal. Gatwick showed a blistering turn of foot when landing a competitive affair at Goodwood in midweek, a performance that came as no surprise given his earlier effort at Newbury. Connections immediately mentioned the Britannia at Royal Ascot so it is plain to see that the three-year-old is clearly held in high regard. First though there is the little matter of adding this class B handicap to his tally, and despite an eight-pound rise in the weights, we think that he has an outstanding chance, especially as Sam Hitchcott claims a valuable three pounds off his back. Although drawn wide in stall 17, he should be able to pick them off in the straight. Zonus is closely-matched with Oasis Star on Chester running and should be better suited by the extra distance today. He is expected to go close as well. Capped For Victory looks just the sort that Sir Michael Stoute would aim at a race like this, but he will have to enjoy a trouble-free passage up the inside from his draw. Appalachian Trail has been aimed at this all season and he too has a low draw. Wily old George Duffield has the skill to weave his way through though, and Ian Semple's charge is no back-number. In a cracking contest, Gatwick is the pick to score again.
