In depth

Verdict

A competitive handicap in which several have claims including Texas Gold, Barrantes and Undeterred but the vote goes to the three-year-old A Very Good Year, who may be open to further improvement. The selection had been campaigned over seven furlongs prior to being dropped to today's distance at Lingfield last time when a staying on second to Fanny's Fancy. The handicapper has seen fit to raise the Terry Mills-trained colt 3lbs for that and that seems fair. Texas Gold a winner here over five furlongs last time and the consistent Barrantes both warrant respect but a bigger danger may be Undeterred. David Barron's gelding has been in consistent form in decent handicaps of late and should be thereabouts again. A market move for either Najeebon or Compton Dynamo would be interesting, while top weight Golden Dixie is, like the selection, open to further improvement. However, he has less scope than A Very Good Year, who looks the one they have to beat.
