Verdict

Just one favourite has won this in ten years and Chilworth Icon was a 20/1 chance when successful a year ago. Mick Channon's charge will be nowhere near those odds despite having not won subsequently as he's running well and is 1lb lower. Three-year-olds have a poor record, which may rule out Sydney Ruffdiamond, who won a lower grade handicap at Ascot and is 6lb higher. Desert Ace hasn't had soft ground since scoring at Goodwood in October and is usually thereabouts at this sort of level but it's NEWTON'S LAW who looks the one to be on. Brian Meehan's charge has been in very good form lately and, after scoring at Newmarket, was badly impeded in the Steward's Cup Consolation and had no chance after. Taajub hasn't won for a very long time but is consistent in this sort of class and should make a bold bid.
