Verdict
The handicapper usually has the measure of modest three-year-olds at this time of the year and Grand Apollo, from the top of the weights, can prove his assumption to be just about right here; with Mrs Shilling and Play Bouzouki others that can give the selection the most to do. Better was expected from the latter when he raced at Bath last month and he surely has more ability than he consented to display then. However, he is not certain to appreciate the drop in distance and may be best watched tonight. Mrs Shilling has nothing to prove on that score and should be capable of making a race of it tonight. However, as is now the norm, she is unlikely to be available at the most attractive odds being the mount of Frankie Dettori, so others make more appeal at the likely odds. Which is where Grand Apollo comes in. She is related to several high-class performers that took a little time to get the hang of what was required of them. Her half-brother, Pretence, was a useful tool at a slightly higher level than this once he had got the hang of things on the racecourse, which bodes well when a closer inspection of Grand Apollo's profile is taken in. Her close up second to Peeress reads as well as anything that is on offer from the rest and, assuming that she runs up to that level, Grand Apollo is going to be very hard to beat here.
