Verdict
A fascinating renewal of this valuable prize with the first three home in last year's event once again in the line up of 19. Take Control took the prize twelve months ago and returns on a favourable mark being 3lb lower. However, Martin Pipe's gelding has been well below his best this year and looks a shadow of former glories. Shotgun Willy was narrowly denied in this last year and the Paul Nicholls-trained gelding showed a willing attitude to make a belated winning reappearance at Haydock last month. But he proved disappointing in last week's Grand National and faces no easy task under top weight in the first-time blinkers so Gunther McBride, who was third in this last year, is taken to reverse the form. The son of Glacial Storm has held his form well this term and put up a particularly fine effort when chasing home La Landiere in the Racing Post Chase at Kempton in February. The eight-year-old has proved himself an admirably consistent sort who goes well on flat tracks such as this and will surely take plenty of beating off a favourable racing weight at the foot of the handicap. Sudden Shock had the ultra reliable Stormez a length behind when the pair finished first and second respectively in last month's William Hill National Hunt Chase at the Festival. There is little to separate the pair on the revised terms and both should be thereabouts while Spendid, who is well treated on his fourth in this three years ago, is another to consider but Ryalux may find this trip stretching his stamina to breaking point and is reluctantly passed over on this occasion.
