Verdict
The David Nicholls-trained Machinist is better than he showed last time but would need to improve to trouble the judge and a safer bet looks to be Advanced, who gets the vote with Reverence rated the pick of the remainder. The selection improved on his reappearance run when a close fifth behind Zidane in the Abernant Stakes at Newmarket last month and a reproduction of that effort would see Kevin Ryan's five-year-old go close here but he should improve again. Hoh Hoh Hoh is capable and any further softening of the ground would increase his chances, while Berbice represents the in-form yard of Richard Hannon and should step up on the form shown on his return in the Free Handicap. Eric Alston's Reverence was a dual Group 1 winner two seasons ago and would have solid claims if able to reproduce that form as he is without any penalties now. However, recent form suggests that he needs to improve to trouble Advanced, who gets the vote.
