In depth
Verdict
The feature race on the card can go to Kind Sir ahead of Talbot Lad, Sir Toby and Golly. Kind Sir has been raised eight pounds for his recent course and distance victory but remains well treated compared to this time last year and should give another bold account. Tony Carroll's charge has been most consistent and prior to his latest win, chased home Venn Ottery at Hereford. With plenty going for him then, Kind Sir is taken to get the better of Talbot Lad in the feature event at the Shropshire track. Talbot Lad has been a model of consistency and is on a retrieval mission after his first-fence fall in the Martell Cognac Novices' Handicap Chase at Aintree. That would have disappointed connections greatly after the gelding's earlier victory here and at Newbury. His latest visits here include a win over today's trip and a subsequent second to Venn Ottery over two miles. He will be a big danger to the selection, perhaps more so than Sir Toby who is quickly returning to form judged on his latest second to Ifni Du Luc at Kempton. That was his first start since November and he goes well on a right-handed track. Golly had a mind of his own when trained by Mark Pitman but seems to have settled down a bit now and his ability may start to come out. It is asking a lot for him to beat the principals here though and we much prefer the claims of Kind Sir who gets the vote.
