Verdict
This should boil down to a match between Lord Rapier and Wild Spice with little to separate the pair. The former is a dour stayer as he showed when a close second over 3m6f in testing conditions at Bangor recently but his jumping has looked far from convincing on occasions and he may prove vulnerable over this shorter trip so preference is for Wild Spice. The Venetia Williams-trained gelding admittedly came to grief last time in a competitive handicap but had previously put up an excellent effort when runner-up to the useful Ask Henry in a Chepstow novice in January. A reproduction would make the son of Mandalus hard to beat with conditions in his favour.
