In depth
Verdict
Ruby Legend has hit form at the right time and may pay to follow again, with Reap and Taffs Well others in with a shout in a wide-open handicap. Ruby Legend is no stranger to Gosforth Park, having turned out here six times in all. Not surprisingly, both of his victories have come here as well, including three weeks ago when Mary Reveley¿s gelding overcame a none-too-smooth passage to justify favouritism. The drop back in trip is offset by the fact that this is a grade lower contest, and he looks sure to make his presence felt. Brandy Cove has not been seen since winning at Southwell in April. Trainer Bryan Smart prefers to run him on the all-weather as he reckons that he does not stand up to the rigours of turf racing. It is therefore surprising to see him turn up here. He may surprise us, but we would rather look elsewhere for potential candidates. Taffs Well gained his last victory over hurdles at Sedgefield in August, since when he has been absent. He will be readied for another spell over obstacles, but is a course and distance winner here in the past and should not be ruled out entirely. Reap has won two of his last three outings, most recently at Newmarket where he held off all-comers, and is still quite well handicapped, so is another to consider. However, in a race in which bets are best kept to a minimum, a small investment in Ruby Legend is the advice.
