In depth
Verdict
In a fascinating three-year-old handicap with several progressive types, we just prefer the chances of Jarjoor ahead of Nuit Sombre and Grand Passion. The latter would have finished a shade closer with a clear run when a fine fourth in a similar race over this course and distance nine days ago. Geoff Wragg's gelding has a good turn of foot and looks poised for a big run. Nuit Sombre is a typically genuine and progressive Mark Johnston-trained three-year-old who has beaten older horses and is still on the upgrade, so he is fully respected. Henry Cecil is generally worth opposing these days so maiden winner La Scala is passed over. El Coto finished just ahead of Grand Passion here last time and continues to be underestimated by the books. Flighty Fellow bolted up at Beverley last time, but he was one of only a handful who stayed on the favoured far side that day and is now nine pounds higher in the weights. Aimees Delight must improve if she is to continue her run in this better company, but our vote goes to Michael Jarvis' Jarjoor, with the only slight worry that he has been off the course for three months. His Beverley second last time is looking excellent form with the first, third and fourth all winning since, conditions will suit and the stable is flying at present.
