Wales coach set to raid Wasps for former England captain

Warren Gatland is set to launch another raid on his former club by offering Lawrence Dallaglio a mentoring role with Wales. Gatland has already convinced former Wasps scrum-half Rob Howley to join his backroom staff, while fitness coach Craig White is set to join in May. Crucially for Gatland, he looks to have finally convinced his former employers at Adams Park to release coach Shaun Edwards to work as he defensive coach. However, not content with securing that triumvirate of his former colleagues, Gatland now wants Dallaglio to join him. Dallaglio has announced his retirement from international rugby - and is keen to earn coaching experience.

Mentor

Gatland has also spoken openly of wanting whoever he chooses as captain to be just like Dallaglio - so recruiting the former England skipper as a mentor could go someway to solving that problem. "I have told Lawrence he can come down and watch the Welsh players," Gatland told the Western Mail. "Maybe, if Lawrence sat down with them at dinner, a few things he said might rub off on them and help us. Lawrence is the best captain I have seen or been associated with. "He talks the talk - but also walks the walk. "If we could get a Wales captain like him it would be ideal, but men like Lawrence Dallaglio don't come around too often. Dallaglio is yet to confirm whether he would swap allegiances to Wales, however the chance to work with Gatland again could sway him.

Chance

He said: "I did say to Warren my retirement from international rugby means I had given up my chance to take him on as a player v coach! "I am looking at coaching and Warren has never been too secretive about things he does "I have worked under Shaun and played alongside Rob, so it would be great to see what they do and what I could do. "It would not be a case of me coming down to spy or spread the word, it would be about me just keeping abreast of what is going on at that level."
