Coach pays the price for failure

Gareth Jenkins has been dismissed as Wales head coach following the defeat by Fiji and elimination from the Rugby World Cup. Wales were shocked 38-34 by Fiji in Nantes on Saturday and failed to reach the quarter-finals of the competition. Jenkins was informed of the Welsh Rugby Union's decision by chief executive Roger Lewis and chairman David Pickering at the team's hotel on Sunday morning.

Under-fire

Jenkins, who took over from Mike Ruddock in April 2006, was already under-fire before the World Cup started after a run of bad results in the last Six Nations and in the build-up to the tournament. During his time in charge, Wales won only six out of 20 games and only two of those - against England and Argentina - came against the major rugby-playing nations. No replacement has yet been named although Llanelli coach Phil Davies is thought to be a leading contender.
