PRO14 derbies on Sky Sports: 1872 Cup and Cardiff Blues hosting Scarlets
Thursday 28 December 2017 13:20, UK
After a sizzling set of Guinness PRO14 festive derbies, the intense rivalries are set to continue this weekend live on Sky Sports.
As we say goodbye to 2017 and get ready to welcome in 2018 we will be bringing you two more live derby fixtures; Glasgow against Edinburgh and Cardiff Blues against Scarlets.
All four sides know the importance of finishing the year on a high and it goes without saying that a glass of champagne on New Year's Eve will taste much sweeter off the back of a win!
The first derby, live on Sky Sports Main Event and Action this weekend, will be the second of three 1872 Cup matches between Edinburgh and Glasgow.
The 1872 Cup is the world's oldest inter-city rugby rivalry and this season it is being decided using a best of three format for the first time.
Last Saturday, the series started in the most dramatic of fashions as Chris Dean's last-gasp, opportunistic try, settled matters in Edinburgh's favour and halted Glasgow's ten-game winning streak in the PRO14.
The victory arrived despite of the fact that the home side had to play with 14-men for 74 minutes at Murrayfield Stadium.
Simon Berghan was handed a red card after the referee, and TMO, deemed that his foot had made contact with Fraser Brown's head at the ruck. Berghan's disciplinary hearing is taking place on December 28.
With the man-advantage Glasgow surged ahead to a 17-6 lead before their hosts clawed their way back into the fixture and Dean finished it in true style.
Edinburgh were victorious on their most recent visit to Scotstoun last May and have suffered only one defeat in their last ten matches in all tournaments.
On the flip side, Glasgow Warriors have lost their last three matches in all competitions however with the 1872 Cup on the line Dave Rennie's side should be firing on all cylinders at home.
New Year's Eve will see Cardiff Arms Park opening its doors for Cardiff Blues against Scarlets, live on Sky Sports Action, and both sides will be eager to consolidate the narrow derby victories that they secured on Boxing Day.
In difficult playing conditions, the Blues made hard work of their encounter with the Dragons. Danny Wilson's side had led 22-3 before finishing the afternoon 22-17 victors.
Scarlets were another team that had to navigate through a match with 14-men after Steff Evans went from hero to villain in their encounter with Ospreys.
It was Evans' try that ignited the first-half, however, his collision in the air with Ben John saw him receive a red card and left his side to battle on without him.
Battle they did, in torrid weather conditions, and their perseverance paid off as replacement Josh Macleod scored the match-wining try off Scott Williams' cross-field kick in the 82nd-minute.
Scarlets have won their last six matches against fellow Welsh regions and their last three matches against the Blues.
Watch the second 1872 Cup between Glasgow and Edinburgh live on Sky Sports Main Event and Action from 3pm on Saturday. Cardiff Blues against Scarlets is live on Sky Sports Action from 3pm on Sunday (New Year's Eve).
