Injury blow for Evans

Scotland centre Max Evans will miss the start of next season due to a serious knee injury.

Scottish centre ruled out for six months with knee problem

Scotland centre Max Evans will miss the start of next season and has seen any slim Lions hopes wiped out after a serious knee injury ruled him out of rugby for up to six months. 25-year-old Glasgow star Evans burst on to the international scene last autumn, but now faces a race against time to be fit for Scotland's November Tests against Fiji, Australia and Argentina. A scan on Tuesday showed Evans suffered a medial ligament injury and cartilage damage following a tackle just after half-time of Sunday's 34-23 Magners League defeat at the Ospreys. He was taken off on a stretcher and will now undergo surgery. Evans had been hoping to earn a late call-up to the Lions squad following Tom Shanklin's withdrawal with a shoulder injury, but, like the Wales centre, he is now facing a lengthy spell of rehabilitation.

Scan results

Glasgow team doctor Gerry Haggerty said: "The outcome of yesterday's scan shows that Max's anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is intact, which is positive news. "He has a medial ligament injury and some cartilage damage. "He will undergo an operation to repair the cartilage and this procedure will also uncover any injury to the ACL that the scan may not have revealed. "At this stage, we can estimate that Max could be out for approximately four to six months." Evans followed younger brother and Glasgow team-mate Thom into the Scotland set-up last year. The pair recently rejected lucrative offers from France to stay on at Firhill. Evans scored a try on his RBS Six Nations debut after coming off the bench in the defeat to Wales and was an ever-present for the remainder of the championship. Meanwhile, Warriors head coach Sean Lineen has again delayed naming his starting XV for Friday night's final Mangers League game of the season against Connacht.
