Newcastle chief hails new signing

Newcastle Falcons have completed the signing of Bath prop Laurence Ovens in a two-year deal. The 23-year old will make the switch after five successful seasons at The Rec. Ovens made his debut back in 2004 in the Heineken Cup, where he made an instant impression. Ovens made the decision to move in May, after he was told by Bath that his contract would not be renewed once it expired. Despite making a big impact when he broke into the team, Ovens has made only six appearances in the last two years, which is something he will be hoping to change at the Falcons.

Ambitious

Director of rugby Steve Bates said: "Laurence's arrival gives us serious competition for places on both sides of the scrum. "He is a young ambitious English player who has impressed us a great deal. "He scrummages well, is a handful around the park and will add to the overall quality of our squad as we look forward to an exciting 2009/10 campaign." Ovens becomes 16th new signing by the Kingston Park outfit, following in the footsteps of players such as Filipo Levi and Leeds Tykes wing Tom Biggs.
