World Cup winners Butch James and Jean de Villiers are being lined up to revitalise the Lions ahead of the expanded Super 15 season.
The Johannesburg franchise have endured a miserable campaign - and will finish the season adrift at the bottom of the table after failing to register a win so far in 12 attempts.
However the Lions have set their sights high for next season - with Bath fly-half James and Munster centre de Villiers believed to be top of their wanted list.
James was close to joining the Sharks only for the deal to fall through - and although the 31-year has confirmed he will see out the remainder of his deal at The Rec, the chance to return to South Africa ahead of the World Cup will be a tempting offer.
Toulon No.8 Joe van Niekerk, a former Lion, is also being linked to a move back to South Africa.
And although Lions chief Kevin de Klerk refused to name his targets, he admitted the club are keen to bolster their squad.
"We can't name anyone, but we are at an advanced stage of negotiations," de Klerk told
