The International Rugby Board has cleared the Millennium Stadium to host matches at the 2015 World Cup.
England will remain the as the only host nation of the tournament but the Rugby Football Union was keen to use the Cardiff venue due to its "strategic importance".
The Millennium Stadium has a capacity of 74,500 and is easily accessible from rugby hotbeds in the English West Country.
The IRB council endorsed the RFU's view on Tuesday and confirmed that the stadium will play a role in the 2015 tournament.
"We are determined that Rugby World Cup 2015 will be the best tournament ever and to do that we want the best stadia available," said Paul Vaughan, chief executive of tournament organisers England Rugby 2015.
Iconic
"Our commitment is to sell three million tickets at iconic and accessible venues. We are delighted that the IRB have listened to our case and that the Millennium Stadium can now be included in our planning for this global event."
Wales were the main host nation of the 1999 World Cup and Cardiff also staged pool matches and a quarterfinal in the 2007 event, which was hosted by France.
"The Millennium Stadium is one of the world's iconic sporting venues with a rich pedigree in hosting major sports events, including matches at Rugby World Cup 1999 and Rugby World Cup 2007," IRB chairman Bernard Lapasset added.
"The venue is ideally positioned as a gateway to the tournament for fans from Wales and the south west and I am sure that it will add another exciting dimension for fans attending the 2015 Rugby World Cup."
The RFU plan to stage matches at numerous famous English venues, including Wembley, the Emirates Stadium, Old Trafford and Anfield as well as club rugby grounds Kingsholm and Welford Road.
Murrayfield in Scotland was not considered due to poor attendances at previous World Cup matches.
