Gavin Henson has joined Championship club Bristol with immediate effect after agreeing an early release from his Bath contract.

Henson, 33, linked up with Andy Robinson’s squad on Wednesday and will be eligible to play in the Greene King IPA Championship this season.

The Welshman, part of the 2005 Grand Slam-winning side, won 33 caps for his country and was a British and Irish Lion in New Zealand the same year.

Henson initially signed a one-year deal with Bath's west country rivals to arrive in the summer.

“We thank Bath for their co-operation in this matter and agreeing to Gavin’s early release,” said Bristol director of rugby Andy Robinson.

“Once he has integrated into our squad, Gavin will be considered for selection and we look forward to seeing him in a Bristol jersey in the near future.”

Bath, meanwhile, have signed back Tom Homer after he was released from the final few months of his contract with London Irish.

Homer, who can play in a number of positions behind the scrum, will move to the Recreation Ground this week.

"Tom is an incredibly-talented young player, and he's got a great attitude that will fit in well with the squad here and our policy of recruiting young, English talent," said Bath head coach Mike Ford said.

"He already has a huge amount of experience, given he's only 24, and we are really looking forward to seeing him continue developing as a player here at Bath."
