The Hurricanes won their first Super Rugby title with a 20-3 win over the Lions in Wellington on Saturday. Both sides endured more than 20 years of pain prior to reaching Saturday's final, but it was the Hurricanes who clinched victory after adapting to poor conditions better than the visitors.

The Lions had perennially been South Africa's worst side in the competition and were even relegated from Super Rugby in 2013 before rebuilding through the domestic Currie Cup. The South Africans won a lot of hearts in 2016 with their expansive approach to the game, and captain Warren Whiteley has promised more from his troops next year.

The Hurricanes had romped through last year's competition and were heavy favourites to clinch their first title, only to fall apart in the showpiece against the Highlanders. This year's team, with only six players who started last year's final taking the field in the 2016 decider, overcame the final hurdle.
