Wallabies forwards Rob Simmons and Kane Douglas will be released by the Reds at the end of the Super Rugby season.

Simmons has played 72 tests for Australia, including World Cups in 2011 and 2015, and made 112 appearances for the Reds, while Douglas has won 30 international caps.

Reds coach Nick Stiles said he was looking to the future with a group of young second-rowers including 20-year-old Lukhan Tui and Izack Rodda.

Douglas and Simmons have taken a back seat to the younger locks in recent games.

Simmons and Douglas were both overlooked by Wallabies selectors in the squad for Australia's this month's Tests against Fiji, Scotland and Italy.

"These conversations are never easy, especially with players who have been with Queensland since they started and who have given their all for the State and the organisation," Stiles said.

"However, we believe that the future lies with the players who started the game in Samoa last weekend and with other emerging second-row talent that has come through our under-20s program.

"The reality is that all Australian Super Rugby teams have to make decisions based on future priorities, as well as salary cap limitations. Rob will leave us at the end of the year with our best wishes and gratitude for the long service he has given Queensland."

The Reds are fourth in the five-team Australian conference with just three wins from 13 matches this season.

The club also confirmed that former Bath forward Leroy Houston has signed a two-year contract with Bordeaux-Begles.

"Leroy has been a great contributor to the squad this year and while he has had injury concerns to contend with through the middle part of the Super Rugby campaign, we agreed to his request for an early release on personal grounds," said Stiles.
