Ambitious Toulon sign Matfield

Springboks Skipper Victor Matfield has agreed to join Toulon for next season.

South Africa captain Victor Matfield will be playing for Toulon in the French second division next season.

Matfield, who is regarded best lock forward in the world, has signed a one-year contract at Toulon, which is due to begin on October 20 after the World Cup.

Matfield is the latest high-profile acquisition for the ambitious French club after the agreement was confirmed by Toulon chairman Mourad Boudjellal.

"We have reached a deal," said Boudjellal.

"He will play at Toulon for one year next season with an option of extending for another year after that."

In signing for the club Matfield joins the illustrious company of scrum-half George Gregan and All Black fly-half Andrew Mehrtens, who have both been agreed deals for the next season.

Matfield holds 57 Springboks caps and was recently named captain of his country ahead of Saturday's Tri-Nations game against New Zealand.

Toulon are setting their sights on promotion in the new season and have also recently appointed the former New Zealand captain Tana Umaga as general manager.
