England to take Care

Harlequins scrum-half Danny Care has been recalled to the England squad for the tour to South Africa.

Quins scrum-half recalled; 13 uncapped players in the squad

Harlequins scrum-half Danny Care has been recalled to the England squad for the tour to South Africa. England boss Stuart Lancaster has also welcomed back James Haskell, Paul Doran-Jones, Anthony Allen and Ugo Monye to the set-up, while 13 uncapped players have been included in the 42-man squad. Carl Fearns, Joe Gray, Joe Marler, Graham Kitchener, Thomas Waldrom, Tom Johnson, Joe Launchbury, George Robson, Tom Youngs, Alex Goode, Jonathan Joseph, George Lowe and Christian Wade will all be pushing for their first caps during the five-match tour. Care makes his return after he was excluded from England's RBS Six Nations campaign on disciplinary grounds while Haskell was unavailable because he was playing in the southern hemisphere. Monye won his last England cap in the 2010 Six Nations, with in-form Leicester centre Allen having been out of the international picture since his two appearances in 2006 under Andy Robinson. Worcester prop Matt Mullan will get the chance to add the solitary cap he won off the bench in 2010, however there is no place in the squad for Nick Easter, Danny Cipriani and Steffon Armitage. Injuries and suspension mean that Chris Brooker, Stuart Hooper, Calum Clark, Tom Croft, Louis Deacon, Courtney Lawes, Charlie Sharples, Joe Simpson, Henry Thomas, Rob Webber, David Wilson, Tom Wood and Nick Wood also miss out.

Challenge

Lancaster said: "Myself and Graham [Rowntree] rang the players yesterday and there is a real excitement about this squad. "We have a massive challenge ahead of us but it is one that everybody involved, players, coaches and management is looking forward to. "While certain players are not available because of inevitable injuries at this time of the season, we have been able to select the bulk of the squad from the RBS Six Nations and the Saxons, while also taking with us four of the Under-20 team which reached last June's Junior World Championship final and we see the return of two experienced internationals in Danny Care and James Haskell." Lancaster has confirmed that Aviva Premiership Rugby player of the season Chris Robshaw will captain the side. "Chris Robshaw was named player of the season on Tuesday night so congratulations to him and it is only right that he continues to captain the team, supported by a strong leadership group," he said. "We will obviously bring some additional players in for the Barbarians game which is another opportunity to look at a wider group who are pushing for selection. It will be great to be back in front of the Twickenham crowd who were so supportive during the Six Nations."
