Wales international lock Ian Evans has been forced to retire from rugby because of a knee injury.

The 32-year-old forward joined Aviva Premiership club Bristol from the Ospreys in 2014 and the club announced his news on medical advice, with the injury limiting his ability to train and play.

Evans made his Wales debut in 2006, and went on to win 33 caps. He made his last Test appearance almost three years ago.

He was part of Wales' Six Nations Grand Slam-winning teams in 2008 and 2012, while he also helped them win another Six Nations title in 2013.

"I am deeply saddened to end my professional career now," Evans told Bristol's club website.

"However, the knee injury I suffered while playing for Bristol prevents me from achieving full fitness and hinders my capability to perform.

"While I am sad that my playing career has come to an end, I'm looking forward to the next chapter and exploring new opportunities. I have been fortunate enough to have had an incredible career.

Evans was also part of the 2013 British and Irish Lions squad, and Bristol's acting head coach Mark Tainton added: "We thank Ian and wish him the best of luck for the future.

"Ian helped Bristol to promotion in 2016, and has been an excellent ambassador for the club.

"He has suffered a challenging period here with his knee injuries, and ultimately, Ian hasn't been able to play a regular run of games."

Bristol's former England Saxons forward Jon Fisher, meanwhile, is to step back from playing after suffering a head injury in December.

Fisher was hurt during a European Challenge Cup game against French club Pau, and he has not played since.

And Bristol say it has been mutually agreed that back-row forward Fisher will take time out to assess his playing career. The 28-year-old joined Bristol from Northampton last summer.
