Wasps have confirmed scrum-half Joe Simpson will miss up to eight weeks with a knee ligament injury.

Simpson was hurt in the club's Aviva Premiership clash with Leicester on Saturday, a game the Tigers won 26-21 at the Ricoh Arena.

He will miss the rest of the domestic season but the club say he will be available for World Cup duty if selected by England coach Stuart Lancaster.

Lancaster names a 45-man training squad next week with Simpson among those bidding for a place - he has only earned one cap, which came against Georgia at the 2011 tournament. The selected players are not due to meet up until the end of June.

A Wasps statement read: "After Joe Simpson was forced to leave the pitch on Saturday against Leicester Tigers, the club has confirmed the Wasps’ scrum-half sustained a grade two medial collateral ligament strain.

"No operation is required and medical staff are confident he will make a full recovery in time to participate in pre-season and in any World Cup preparations should he be selected. Simpson will undergo a period of rest and rehabilitation for approximately six to eight weeks."
