All Blacks fly-half Lima Sopoaga has signed a new three-year deal with New Zealand Rugby and Super Rugby champions the Highlanders.

The 24-year-old made his debut for New Zealand against South Africa last year and was unlucky to miss out on selection for their victorious World Cup squad last month.

He had set a season record for the Highlanders in the 2015 Super Rugby campaign by scoring 191 points.

Sopoaga is likely to feature more regularly for the All Blacks next season after the retirement from international rugby of long-standing first-choice fly-half Dan Carter.

Sopoaga said: "I owe a lot to the Highlanders for sticking by me and allowing me to develop not only as a player but as a person.
