Wallabies winger suffers gruesome injury in 'Tahs defeat
Australia wing Drew Mitchell will miss the World Cup later this year after suffering a dislocated ankle in the Waratahs' 19-15 defeat to the Reds on Saturday.
The 27-year-old fell awkwardly while chasing a kick in the 19th minute of the Super Rugby clash and was immediately taken from the pitch on a stretcher.
It was later confirmed Mitchell also broke a bone in his leg and is likely to be out of action for a considerable period.
"He'll be gone for the year," Waratahs coach Chris Hickey said. "It's a pretty significant injury.
'Tahs skipper Phil Waugh admitted the serious nature of the injury shocked the players.
"I think it rattled anyone who saw it," he said. "It was disappointing - you don't want to see that happen to anyone in the world in any sport."
