Brisbane-born player happy to remain with home franchise

Versatile back Ben Lucas has signed a new deal with the Queensland Reds. Lucas is expected to take on more responsibility for Queensland in the key playmaking positions within coach Ewen McKenzie's squad in 2013. The 24-year-old made his debut for the franchise in 2008 and played a role in the Reds' Super Rugby triumph last year. Despite injury ending his campaign early, Lucas' efforts were recognised by Australia coach Robbie Deans, who selected the Brisbane-born talent on the end-of-year Wallabies' tour to Europe following the World Cup. "Ben has shown he has the versatility to cover a number of positions for us in the past and we see him playing a more influential role in the key playmaking positions moving forward," said McKenzie. "He has demonstrated in each starting opportunity that he has earned in 2012 and in the past that he is an integral part of this team and he's the type of player and person this organisation is trying to retain and attract.

"Ben also is a product of the Queensland pathways, starting with Queensland Schoolboys and going on to the former Queensland Academy and then through to the elite level. "We're thrilled Ben has chosen to remain at the Reds as he continues to develop his Rugby in the prime of his career." Lucas has made 44 appearances for Queensland and aspires to many more. "I love being in Queensland, my family's here, I've grown up here and I really enjoy being a part of the Reds set-up and playing my rugby here," he said. "I know the notion of staying at one club has died out somewhat but it really holds value to me, I want to reach 100 games for Queensland and believe it's something to aspire to and to treasure. "I feel that my best rugby is still to come, I've got a lot to learn and I'm really looking forward to what's ahead for me at the Reds."
