Springbok fly-half Pat Lambie will be sidelined for about 12 weeks with a dislocated shoulder, the Sharks have announced.
The Sharks said Lambie underwent surgery on Monday following the injury, which was picked up in the 29-21 win over European champions Toulon in pre-season.
He is likely to miss at least the first 10 rounds of the Super Rugby season and could also be in doubt for South Africa's three-Test home series against Ireland in June.
South Africa are already without Handre Pollard for the entire season after he ruptured knee ligaments in pre-season training with his Bulls team. Pollard will be out at for least nine months.
It is not yet known who will coach the Springboks against Ireland, with Heyneke Meyer stepping down from the role in the wake of last year's World Cup where the Boks dramatically lost to Japan in the pool stages.
