Wing back in squad, Cowan faces fitness test

New Zealand wing Rene Ranger has been recalled to the 26-man All Blacks squad for their Tri-Nations clash with South Africa on August 21. The 23-year-old scored a try in his full debut against the Springboks earlier in the competition but was still dropped to make way for the returning Joe Rokocoko. However, he has now earned another call-up for the trip to Johannesburg, with injured centre Richard Kahui being unable to make the trip. Back row Liam Messam has also not been included in the squad while Jimmy Cowan is named despite being an injury doubt for the contest. The scrum-half, who is currently struggling with a rib injury, will undergo a fitness test on Thursday to determine whether or not he will be available.

Replacement

If Cowan is ruled out, Blues number nine Alby Mathewson will travel in his place. Five members of the travelling party have been made available for their provincial sides for the ITM Cup. Tasman's Ben Franks, Hawke's Bay's Israel Dagg, Corey Flynn and Sam Whitelock of Canterbury and North Harbour's Anthony Boric are all set to play in the third round of the competition. The All Blacks have won every match of their Tri-Nations campaign so far and need only a single bonus point from their remaining two contests to secure the crown. New Zealand squad - Forwards: John Afoa, Anthony Boric, Tom Donnelly, Corey Flynn, Ben Franks, Owen Franks, Jerome Kaino, Richie McCaw (capt), Keven Mealamu, Kieran Read, Brad Thorn, Victor Vito, Sam Whitelock and Tony Woodcock. Backs: Daniel Carter, Jimmy Cowan/Alby Mathewson, Aaron Cruden, Israel Dagg, Cory Jane, Mils Muliaina, Ma'a Nonu, Rene Ranger, Joe Rokocoko, Conrad Smith, Benson Stanley and Piri Weepu.
