South Africa team doctor has labelled Duane Vermeulen's surgery a success and says he is confident Vermeulen will recover in time for the World Cup.
Vermeulen went under the knife at short notice on Wednesday, prompting fears that the No 8 would not be fit in time for the World Cup which kicks off in September.
But team doctor Craig Roberts was pleased with the outcome of the surgery, and went a long way to allay the concerns of the Springboks coaching team.
"The operation went well and we're grateful to the medical personnel who looked after Duane," said Roberts. "The road to recovery is a long one but we're confident that he can make it to the World Cup."
Vermeulen himself was quoted in a press release from the South African Rugby Union as recovering well: "I'm feeling good and positive and can't wait to start my rehabilitation," said the Toulon-bound forward.
Springboks coach Heyneke Meyer expected the No 8 to apply his on-field work ethic to his rehabilitation.
"Duane is mentally very tough and he is a warrior who has always bled for his country and I'm expecting exactly the same attitude from him towards his rehabilitation," Meyer said.
"He is a team player who has often played through the pain barrier and I know nothing will hold him back, while we will do everything we can to get Duane ready in time for the World Cup."
Vermeulen will spend time recuperating at home before heading to Johannesburg to join the squad when they get back from their Rugby Championship opener against Australia in Brisbane.
