Connacht hooker Tom McCartney has signed a new three-year deal with the Irish province, putting him in contention for a future Ireland call-up.
As per the terms of rugby's residency law, once an uncapped player spends three years in another country they become eligible for national selection.
It's a rule which has seen the likes of Fiji-born Nathan Hughes and South Africa-born CJ Stander and W.P Nel line-out for England, Ireland and Scotland respectively.
McCartney joined Connacht from New Zealand Super Rugby franchise the Blues in November 2014, making him eligible for Ireland selection in November 2017.
The forward's new extension will take him past that date and is a real fillip for Connacht following the news that coach Pat Lam will leave his role early to join Bristol Rugby next season.
"I'm delighted to sign on for another three years with Connacht Rugby," said McCartney.
"I came here excited to be able to help the province achieve its vision of success and I believe we have the structures in place to see us continue to go from strength to strength."
McCartney has made 53 appearances for the Galway based province in two-and-a-half seasons and was key to their Pro12 title success last year.
"I'm delighted for Connacht Rugby and our supporters that Tom has re-signed," added departing coach Lam.
"It is a massive statement for the future of the squad and the province.
"I've known Tom for so much of his career and he is a valuable leader on and off the pitch. Along with all the other recent re-signings, he will be an important contributor to the future success of the province."
The extension for 31-year-old McCartney follows on from similar contract signings for teammates Bundee Aki and Ultan Dillane, and Connacht chief executive Willie Ruane expressed his delight at the news.
"This is a hugely positive move for Connacht Rugby and a big statement from Tom highlighting the belief and confidence he has in the future of the club," Ruane added.
"Tom came to Connacht from overseas and in a short time he has made a very positive impact on our environment here.
"He is an important member of the squad and very popular among our supporters. We are thrilled that he sees his future with Connacht."
