Munster's Johne Murphy has announced his retirement from the game after 10 years at the top level.

The 30-year-old made the announcement via the Munster website.

"I'm grateful for the long and successful career that I've had but it is now time to call an end to it," said Murphy.

"I would like to thank all my mentors, coaches, teammates, the fans who have made my time in the sport so special and most of all my family for all the support they have given me throughout the last 10 years."

The former Leicester outside back then took to Twitter to comment further.

"After 10 great years in rugby, I've decided it's time to move on," he wrote.

"I would like to thank absolutely everyone who has supported and helped me over the last 10 years.

"It's been an incredible journey. With memories that will stay with me forever.

"I'm extremely excited/nervous about the future but can't wait to get stuck into something new! Thank you again. It's been a blast!"

Murphy made a total of 91 appearances for Munster, lifting the PRO12 trophy in 2011, and also featured in Munster's historic win over Australia at Thomond Park in 2010.

Before joining Munster, Murphy made 99 appearances for Leicester, winning the English Premiership three times and an EDF Energy Cup over the course of five years at the club.
